Sad news 29/6/10
It is with great sadness that we heard today of the passing of Tommy Slone, after being diagnosed with cancer five months ago. Tommy was with Past Masters more or less at the beginning in 2000 and had to retire in May 2001 after a serious accident, though he appeared as a deputy for Dave Eyre on several occasions. He had been in Weston Park Hospital, before being moved to the Palliative Care Unit at Sheffield Northern General Hospital where I saw him only a few days ago.
Tommy moved from his native Newcastle Upon Tyne in the early seventies when he joined Sheffield band 'Bitter Suite' who had a fair amount of success back then and he made his home here. He had played drums for me when working solo and for our charity outfit 'Damion & The Diamonds' though the eighties into the nineties before eventually becoming a Past Master, replacing Darren Ford at the turn of the millennium. He also worked with Derek and myself when we did the three piece stuff back then, as well as part of our stint at The Wetherby at Swallownest and later at The Midland in Killamarsh.
Tommy will be sadly missed not only as a lovely friend and musician, but for his fantastic sense of humour, which was still evident when I saw him last week, as we were still able to have a laugh and joke in spite of his illness.
Tommy's funeral service will take place at Grenoside Crematorium North Chapel on Thursday July 8th.
