Reunion part three The Acorn Theatre Worksop - Sunday 22 May
See gig list for full details

We are delighted to add Adrian Fountain and Daniel Martin to our squad - Adrian will take on some lead vocals as well as playing lead and rhythm guitars as well as some bass and keyboards, freeing up Dave and Derek to do other stuff. Daniel will act as second lead guitarist and deputy drummer as well as adding his vocals to the cause, which allows a greater spectrum of numbers from which to choose. Dave has also added yet another instrument to his collection in the form of a 'G' banjo . . . . he just needs to learn how to play it.
This results in Past Masters now boasting a choice of three drummers - but not at the same time !
Daniel Martin,John Firminger and Dave Eyre will be sharing the percussion seat and it's great to have these two guys with us and it goes without saying that Dave Eyre needs no introduction, as he was with us for six years before having to quit because of 'proper job' duties . . . .
For those who don't know, John Firminger pictured below, is a long standing friend of the band and is an excellent drummer, still with Dave Berry & The Cruisers after twelve years! John is also an excellent artist and his murals can be seen in various locations around South Yorks. In 2001 his co-written book with Martin Lilleker about the 1955/1975 Sheffield music scene, 'Not Like A Proper Job' was launched to great acclaim at a reception at the former 'Black Swan' pub, now known as 'The Boardwalk', along with a concert that we were proud to be a part of, in the presence of many of the participants in the book.
Daniel and Adrian are also now part of the Dave Berry outfit, Daniel replacing Johnny Marcheta with Adrian acting as 'sub' for the rhythm guitar job when required.
This leaves us with five members and former members of The Cruisers in Past Masters - we'll be doing Dave's act next . . . . . . . .
News 17 Feb 2011
Once again our gig at the Acorn Theatre in Worksop on May 22 will be a Past Masters reunion as Jock will once again be putting in an appearance for some part of the show and we will have three guests joining the band, Daniel Martin and Adrian Fountain of The Foot Tappers and Kevin Harris who will feature in our 'Crepes & Drapes' set.
Tickets are already selling fast for this (over 50% sold to date) and we anticipate a great night, performing all the old favorites once again along with some new (to us at least) material.
Our AUGUST 10 - Charity show in aid of McMillan Palitaive Care unit at the Northern General Hospital - in memory of Tommy Slone raised a total of £1026 which was donated to the cause and we sincerely thank everyone who came and supported this event in the memory of Tommy.
Special thanks to all those who donated for the raffle and the folks connected with High Green WMC who organised the fund raising and our friends Damion, Carl Peters and The Beat Merchants for agreeing to perform with us on this great night.
Sad news 29/6/10
It is with great sadness that we heard today of the passing of Tommy Slone, after being diagnosed with cancer five months ago. Tommy was with Past Masters more or less at the beginning in 2000 and had to retire in May 2001 after a serious accident, though he appeared as a deputy for Dave Eyre on several occasions. He had been in Weston Park Hospital, before being moved to the Palliative Care Unit at Sheffield Northern General Hospital where I saw him only a few days ago.
Tommy moved from his native Newcastle Upon Tyne in the early seventies when he joined Sheffield band 'Bitter Suite' who had a fair amount of success back then and he made his home here. He had played drums for me when working solo and for our charity outfit 'Damion & The Diamonds' though the eighties into the nineties before eventually becoming a Past Master, replacing Darren Ford at the turn of the millennium. He also worked with Derek and myself when we did the three piece stuff back then, as well as part of our stint at The Wetherby at Swallownest and later at The Midland in Killamarsh.
Tommy will be sadly missed not only as a lovely friend and musician, but for his fantastic sense of humour, which was still evident when I saw him last week, as we were still able to have a laugh and joke in spite of his illness.
Tommy's funeral service will take place at Grenoside Crematorium North Chapel on Thursday July 8th.
RIP Tommy - and thanks for the memories.
- March 5 2010
We regret that Alan Jones will not be appearing with us at the Acorn Theatre on April 18th as he has cancelled the gig without explanation at this point.
The show will go ahead as planned.
January 2010
Due to an unfortunate accident, we are sorry to report that Alan Jones will no longer be able to perform on a regular basis due to a back injury and has had to stand down as our regular bass guitarist.
It isn't all doom and gloom though and we are delighted to be able to announce that he will be replaced by former bass player Derek Brown, as from January 27 2010.
Latest news @ Friday 13 November 2009
To coincide with our intended theatre shows, a new CD is in the process of being recorded including some original tracks written by the band, as well as some 'new oldies'. We now have the title track 'Let's Rock The Jukebox' already in the can and recording of the album is under way.
Also, a new instrumental album with new material as well as some rearranged 'covers' is in the pipeline.
After a great night the first time around, we're back at THE ACORN THEATRE, WORKSOP
TICKETS NOW ON SALE AT THE VENUE - see GIGS
On May 1st we sadly said farewell to our bassist Derek Brown who is going pursue a solo career, but we are fortunate to have a great replacement in Alan Jones, a former session bassist and a member of Tom Jones's band as well as Cliff Richard and The Shadows in the 70's & 80's. Alan moved back to South Yorks in 2005 and has deputised for Derek on a few occasions.

Clubland turns out in force to bid John Bridges of Dukeries Entertainments a wonderful retirement
On Wednesday 15th October, Past Masters were honoured and delighted to take part in an 'all live' concert at Forest Town Welfare to say farewell to one of the nicest agents in the business. John Bridges, founder of Dukeries Entertainments is moving to Malta in his retirement and ourselves, along with all the fellow agents, club bookers and artistes who packed the venue for the show were reminded of the good old days of clubland, with a packed house, live backing and electric atmosphere.J
John's grandchildren 'The Dukerettes' (Scott & Kayleigh) greeted him into the club from the stage aided by mum Tanya, then it was time for the non stop show to begin.
The featured artistes included Les Malcolm. Big Jimmy Martin, Hayley, Sunny Daye, Ian Bruce, Mark Stanley, King & I, 2 To Go, Harry Turnstyle, Peter Laurie, and Ruth Stanford, with a special introduction by Eric (Sir James) Linacre all backed superbly by the Colin Irving Sound with the show rounded off by Past Masters , which finally came to a close at 11-45pm.
Dukeries staff Tanya, Charlie, Foz ,Carol and Yvonne did a superb job not only organising the show, but keeping it quiet from John himself, who thought he was going out for a 'quiet drink'. My own allegiance to this lovely bloke is borne out of the service and work he has acquired for me and us for over three decades - yes thirty one years, which is over half my lifetime to date, so when asked if we wanted to perform it was a 'no brainer' (as is often said these days). I wouldn't have missed it for the world and hope that John and Isabel enjoy a wonderful warm and sunny retirement in Malta. Live music certainly shone at Forest Town on this occasion !
Tanya, Foz, Charlie and John of Dukeries Entertainments at Forest Town with Past Masters
Since June 2007 when Johnny Riley took over the drum seat in Past Masters, we have enjoyed the benefit of his experience and quite a few new songs in the rock & roll field that we had never had the pleasure of playing before. Strangely enough, Johnny is a big Carl Perkins fan and I had just returned from a visit to the birth of Rock & Roll (Sun Studios in Memphis) as he joined the band. To say I was inspired by that visit (as well as taking in Nashville and RCA Studio 'B' where all the big Elvis, Everly's and Roy Orbison hits were made) would be an understatement and I realised on that trip that I admired Elvis more than I knew. I am a big admirer of Carl Perkins myself since learning more about him after our Sun Studio visit and discussing his contribution to rock and roll with Johnny, as I only tended to associate Mr Perkins with 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'Matchbox' and 'Honey Don't'. Johnny introduced us to more of his music and we like it a lot - so do the audiences.
It's a fact that whenever new members join an outfit like ours, they always bring something to the band different from before - in Johnny Riley's case it's his different vocals and refreshingly 'new' (but ancient) songs as well as his unusual drumming style. The verdict from people in our audiences is a massive thumbs up and we are told by the booking agents that the band has broadened it's appeal. Another 'honorary' member of Past Masters for the last year and a half has been Damion, who does a great job fronting the show on selected gigs, as well as deputising for Malc when needed. His superb vocals add another dimension to our Cliff & The Shadows tribute shows and we look forward to doing more of the same whenever his availability permits. During 2007 we also introduced a great young guitarist to the Past Masters' audiences in Daniel Martin, who we spotted at one of the Shadows clubs a couple of years ago. This lad has come on in leaps and bounds and has the potential to do well in this business. He will continue to deputise for Malc as and when necessary, but he is back with his old band 'The Foot Tappers' and we will have to hope they don't need him first ! So , it's onward and upward and we'll keep performing live shows whilst ever we are able to do so. Thanks everyone who has supported us over the years and we look forward to continue to see you at our gigs. We wish you all a Happy, Prosperous and HEALTHY new 2008 !
Dave Robinson
After six great years, we say farewell to Dave Eyre
On June 17 at the Dusty Miller, Dave Eyre played his last gig with Past Masters on what was a memorable show, joined on stage by two former bassists of The Shadows - Brian Locking and Alan Jones.
It was a 'Shadows' nostalgia night with former Shadows bassman 'Licorice' aka Brian Locking - the guy that replaced Jet Harris back in 1962 and went on to enormous heights appearing in 'Summer Holiday' with Cliff Richard and playing on a load of number one hits during his eighteen month stint. As a pleasant surprise, another Shadows bass player - Alan Jones also made a guest appearance. Alan was actually the longest serving bass guitarist with The Shadows having notched up fourteen consecutive years 1976/1990, before leaving to take part in Dave Clark's musical 'Time' in the West End with Cliff Richard, during which time he suffered terrible injuries in a car crash on the M4, on his way to the theatre. Thankfully Alan made a full recovery having been told that he would never walk, drive or play guitar again and we were happy to see him on top form at the Dusty. We also featured young Doncaster based guitarist Daniel Martin on the show and it was great to see how far this lad has come on since we met him a couple of years ago. He responds to criticism and encouragement and is blossoming into one of the best 'young professionals ' we have ever seen. There has been occasion for him to deputise for Malcolm and he does the job admirably.
It's always sad when a band loses a member that contributed such a lot, especially after six years success at this level, but Dave's work has demanded more of his time recently and a decision had to be made resulting in the 'work has to come first' cliche. For now he is hanging up his sticks and taking a well earned rest, though we will be seeing him behind the kit once more later in the year when we team up with Warren Bennett for a 'one off' gig in Germany.
To say that we are fortunate in acquiring his replacement would be an understatement as we have drafted in Johnny Riley, who is one of the best on the circuit. Johnny is just what we needed as his rock and roll roots are firmly based around what Past Masters are all about, bringing in yet another dimension to our shows. He's a terrific vocalist too and we are happy to have him on board. So far we have not been able to rehearse and the shows are going great, so I personally can't wait to see what happens when we actually get some time together in the rehearsal studio.
We wish Dave Eyre all the very best and thank him for his great talent and contribution for the last six years.

THE
PAST MASTERS from England closed the evening with an excellent mix of vocals and
instrumentals, their announcements and comments were spiced up with typical
English, dry humour. They performed 27 songs by many big Rock &
Roll-performers such as The Shadows, The Dakotas, Cliff Richard, Chuck Berry and
Buddy Holly and their performance was of highest quality.
Time went on, as usual, much too fast. Last band of the day were THE PAST MASTERS from England, who presented a fantastic “Cliff Richard-and-The-Shadows”-show, spiced up with a lot of jokes and humour. Brian Locking, together with THE PAST MASTERS, performed a couple of numbers from his own album.
We
spent the rest of the evening and also a few hours of the early next day in the
pub, together with THE PAST MASTERS and Brian Locking. It was there when I
learned, in a talk with their rhythm guitarist Malcolm Towndrow, that he
(Malcolm), played the Hamburg Star Club in 1963 (with this then-band) where he
also met the (German) band THE RATTLES. And, that the bassplayer in his band in
1963 was a guy named Chris Stainton, who later changed to keyboards and
performed with many high class rock artists from the late 60s on. The last time
I saw Chris Stainton was in Dortmund in July when he played in Eric Clapton’s
band. How small the (music) world can be….
High
class finale by THE PAST MASTERS who closed with a great performance.
After
the UB-HANK-BAND I thought it was impossible to top it. But THE PAST MASTERS did
top it. Maybe also because David Robinson, centre of the band, owns high class
performer’s qualities as entertainer, musician and singer, which all together
gives the band a broad variety, surely a “master-performance”. He was
definitely right when he said at the end: “That was Rock and Roll”.

were the UB-Hank-Band and THE PAST MASTERS.
THE
PAST MASTERS did a fantastic high class finale.

I
think a few guitarists were too loud. The last band, the very good PAST MASTERS,
were a little bit too loud, this probably due to their leader Dave Robinson who
became louder and louder. Their big idols, THE SHADOWS, never did that so I
wonder why this really fantastic band needs so much loudness. Musically they
were high classed.
Absolute
high class performances came from Ladi Geisler & Joe Sydow, The UB-Hank-Band
and THE PAST MASTERS, who are all, beside their musical abilities, very nice and
friendly persons.
A
giant shadowsy sound also from THE PAST MASTERS who came on stage in the right
moment to blow away the little tired-ness which came on here and there.
Excellent sound, good choice of songs.
THE
PAST MASTERS were fantastic, but I’d prefer, at that time in the evening, more
fast numbers and less slower ones, especially since it was a long day filled up
with music.
For
me, the last band of the day, THE PAST MASTERS could have played 40 songs or
more – I can’t get enough of them.
For
me, the highlights were the UB-Hank-Band and THE PAST MASTERS which impressed
with their fantastic vocal performances.
Climax
and best band of the evening, for me, were THE PAST MASTERS from Sheffield. It
was quite easy to recognize that they are real professionals who perfectly
performed instrumentals and vocals which always sounded authentical and never
old-fashioned. For me, they could have even played another hour longer.
Last
band of the night were the guys from England, who did excellent Cliff-vocals,
fantastic sound with ESE Echomatic Echobox. A highlight of the day.
THE
PAST MASTERS were excellent, also their vocal performances.
Personal
highlight of the day, for me, were THE PAST MASTERS and I had to stay awake,
enjoy their performance and, for me as a hobby guitarist, wonder what you can do
with a guitar.

THREE D's at BRUCE WELCH'S SHADOWMANIA 2006
We were delighted to be involved in the 2006 Shadowmania which is presented annually by Shadows rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch. There was a void left by the absence of now 'retired' The Vibratos so Warren Bennett and Dave Robinson were joined once again by Dave Eyre on drums but a wonderful surprise was the the inclusion of Derek Brown on bass for Mark Griffiths who appeared as a guest for three tunes on lead guitar.
The icing on the cake however was the appearance of the legendary Brian Bennett on drums for the end of the show with Dave Eyre moving onto percussion and then being joined by Brian 'Licorice' Locking for the last tune which reunited two of the old 'Krewcats' for Brian Bennett's 'Jack's Good'.

We are pleased to be supporting THE MERSEYBEATS at The Sherwood in Sheffield on Friday November 10th. This is a reunion of the old Frechville Community Centre dances of the early 1960's that were organised by Tony Smith . . . see you there ? Details for tickets on our Gig List
Dusty Miller on Wednesday 2nd August
We were pleased to have former Shadows bassist Alan Jones with us whilst Derek took a holiday in Benidorm with 'Sticky Vicky'. . . . . well not exactly, he took his wife Linda, but those who know Benidorm will know what I mean.
Alan is recovering from an operation and literally 'sat in' with the band on a bar stool, but it didn't affect his superb playing style - this guy was part of Tom Jones band in the seventies and was actually 'head hunted' by Elvis in Las Vegas, as well as playing on every major hit as a session bassist during the seventies and eighties, it was a packed house and a great night and those present witnessed a real pop music legend at work . . . . . .

Fantastic night at the Abbeydale Cinema Sheffield !
With Dave Berry & The Cruisers headlining this all star show, a capacity crowd made the place rock to the rafters and around £10,000 was raised for the restoration fund for this great theatre.
Organiser Barry Northall introduced Pete Stringfellow onto the stage to chat with the audience and shared some great banter, talking about the early days of Sheffield's music scene of which he was a very important part of as he owned several clubs, including the Black Cat, Blue Moon & Mojo, bringing in legendary acts from Merseyside including The Beatles, as well as promoting his fabulous soul shows at the Mojo with the likes of Rod Stewart, Julie Driscoll, Booker T and The MG's to name a few.
Peter gave Past Masters a great build up and for the next hour the place rocked with hits from Danny & The Juniors to Cliff & The Shadows - Beatles - Drifters - Elvis - Buddy , in fact the job lot and a deserved standing ovation - on the opening set !
Another former member of The Cruisers - Frank White came to the stage next and did his excellent set of Blues/Country/Rock & Roll in only the way he can. Accompanied by a piano, bass and drums line up, Frank eased his way through some blues classics with some superb guitar solos and was again given the appreciation he deserves.
Pete Stringfellow's auction for an autographed electric guitar in the interval raised £1000.00 and we were soon back with the music.
The final act - Dave Berry and The Cruisers brought the show to a close and rocked the place good style, with a sprinkling of his hits accompanied by classic pop from the sixties and some good guitar playing shared by Jason and John but particularly Brian Wood's steel guitar solo caught the ears. As always John Firminger on drums was superb as well as being entertainingly humorous.

Latest news: On September 23 2006 at Shadowmania hosted by Bruce Welch, Three members of Past Masters will be joining Warren Bennett on stage as part of the band line up. Drummer Dave Eyre, bassist Derek Brown and Lead Guitarist Dave Robinson will join Shadows keyboard player Warren to perform a forty minute set of instrumental and vocal favorites associated with The Shadows.
On October 7, The guitar & drum section of Past Masters will perform at the German Cliff Richard and The Shadows Convention in Verden Germany . Unfortunately we can't confirm Warren Bennett on keyboards as he is unable to give a definite 'yes' because of work commitments - he may turn up at the last minute if the film company to whom he is contracted don't need him to be on hand.
We appear every Wednesday at The Dusty Miller at Barlborough and a pleasant change is in store at this great little pub, as a fine range of drinks and snacks are always available, as well as a warm welcome and Adrian's fabulous FREE bowl of stew which really warms the cockles . . . . . His Sunday dinners are a real treat too !
INFO . . . . The DUSTY MILLER is just off junction 30 of the M1 towards Sheffield and is the first turn right into Barlborough village - see you there with all the others !
Past Masters will continue as a five piece outfit having being able to confirm that Malc Towndrow is back permanently and we look forward into 2006. We are pleased to announce that we will be joined by Damion on lead vocals for selected gigs and certain rock and roll events in the coming year. Damion has worked with Derek and Dave Robinson in the past in their late eighties / early nineties 'Cliff & The Shadows' tribute band 'Damion & The Diamonds' with whom they performed many charity concerts for various causes. Also an excellent guitarist, Damion is known for his authentic 'Cliff Richard' repetoire.

POSITIVE REVIEW - Past Masters
After seeing one of my favourite acts Past Masters with their new line up at Sheffield Lane WMC on new years day, I was a little worried that they were going to change their style to suit their new lead vocalist Adrian. But last weekend at Crookes WMC my fears were unfounded as Adrian was not there and the two guitarists Dave and Malc shared lead vocals, each taking centre stage as they were featured.
The format sparkled with superb instrumental work from the band as well as good strong harmonies from all when required and made for a magic nights entertainment. I must add that the lighting and sound were also stunning.
At 8-30 the club was packed as the band was due on, but the concert chairman had to delay the start of the show as extra tables and chairs were brought in as more people appeared, taking up the dance floor. It was just like New Years Eve according to some of the members with a concert room that was packed to the rafters.
As the music for the introduction began, the lights darted around the stage as if to be searching for the band members and then the guys blasted into Hoots Mon followed by a selection of great legendary numbers including two favourites of mine, Acker Bilks Stranger On The Shore superbly played by Mick Batty, then The Crying Game which was a hit for two of members of the band who used to be part of Dave Berry and Cruisers. I particularly liked the joke made about this song being ‘sung in tune’ for a change’ which drew laughter from the large crowd.
There were some great Elvis/Jordanaires sounds amongst a set list too long to detail, but I will mention a wonderful Shadows tribute as always and a even a more recent nod towards Dire Straits with Mark Knopfler’s haunting Theme from Local Hero to end a superb first set.
The second set was even more enjoyable as the lads had the dance floor (what was left of it) packed and they were even taking requests thrown up onto the stage. This is the beauty of live music.
During the interval I briefly spoke to lead guitarist Dave and he told me that they were still looking for the right kind of guy to come in to ‘front’ the band and had an idea who they wanted, but didn’t say who. In my humble opinion on this form they don’t need to bother, as they were outstanding, the best I’ve seen them in months with a house still packed to capacity shouting for more at a quarter to midnight.

TONY MEEHAN R.I.P
It is with great sadness that we hear of the death of Tony Meehan, the original drummer with our favourite group 'THE SHADOWS' and our condolences go out to his family and friends. Tony who was 62, had a fall at his home on November 27 and a neighbour found him some three to four hours later - he died in hospital shortly afterwards.
Tony was the drummer on 'Apache' right through to 'Wonderful Land' and the fabulous first album 'The Shadows' and it was these early sounds that set the yardstick for all the other groups to follow. After Tony left the group, he went on to have chart hits with former Shadows bassist Jet Harris, the most notable being Jerry Lordan's 'Diamonds' which knocked The Shadows off the number one spot in 1962, after which he made a career from arranging and working behind the scenes in the music business. He is sadly missed.

New DVD / CD single in aid of the Royal British Legion
OUT NOW !
We have now released a four track video CD which is an effort by ourselves to raise some funds for the Royal British Legion. The feature track being our own 'NO RETREAT' which was written by Malc Towndrow who is working with the band once more, schedule permitting.
Another self penned instrumental ' The Valiant' by Dave Robinson, as well as the old wartime favorite 'WE'LL MEET AGAIN' are accompanied by a moving guitar version of HM Royal Marines 'Sunset' , with a beautiful narration from Bobby Knutt, ending with the haunting 'Retreat' bugle call played by the lads with the guitars & drums plus the amazing Fantom X8 with bogus bombardier Brown.
The double pack containing DVD and CD with backing tracks is now available at £10.00 and can be ordered via this site on the CD page or from ourselves at gigs.
Also
We have now completed our next CD album, which was recorded live at the wedding reception of our good friends Dave and Tina Ledger, when we appeared at the Hill Top Sports & Social Club, Dronfield on July 31st . It was recorded on the fabulous 24 track Roland VS2480 and after a few repairs and a clean up, I have to say I'm well happy with it. Full details are on our CD page.

END OF AN ERA ?
When The Shadows final tour came to an end at the London Palladium on June 14, we are left to reflect and remember the enjoyment that we shared at the concerts that we attended. After the opening night at Scarborough, four of our Past Masters caught the show at the Sheffield City Hall and Derek and myself along with our partners were joined in the Indian restaurant by Bruce Welch, Mark Griffiths and Cliff Hall for what was a great laugh and a good meal. Joy and I dropped them back to their hotel at 2am after arranging to meet in Nottingham later in the tour. My third visit to the concert was at Manchester Opera House and one could see the show 'tightening up' as it progressed. These guys are the best and one can only learn and benefit from knowing them. One can only hope that the possibility of a continuation of the farewell tour into Europe and the far east in 2005 is as good as the surrounding rumours.
On Thursday 27 May, Joy and I met Dave and Annie at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham and witnessed another superb live concert and were delighted to meet up with the band in the Indian 'ruby' house at the back of the theatre after the show. After a great meal with Bruce, Brian, Hank and Mark and the road crew, we said our goodbyes and headed home, after what was to be our final sighting of our heroes on this tour.
Just by watching these guys perform, the effect on our own band has been noticeable. There's a renewed passion in our performances and the music so our audience benefit a great deal. Roll on the next Final Shadows tour !
Did I speak too soon . . . .?
The Shadows tour has been extended into Europe in 2005 and the final gig is to be the Birmingham N.I.A. on May 15.
A nice little bonus was when Brian Bennett took a happy snap of Hank and myself mid-conversation.

My long awaited Burns guitar finally arrived on Wednesday June 2nd , it's a limited edition of 2004 'Marvin' to celebrate forty years (1964/2004 ) of the guitar's existence. One nice surprise for me is the serial number - 0040 - great eh?
What with the new Gibson J200 arriving in April I seem to have enjoyed quite a spending spree, just need a lottery win now to pay for them !
Derek has also acquired a new Fender Jazz Bass in white & tortoiseshell which matches the Marvin splendidly, as can be seen below . . . . .
Having just arrived home from a break in Cala D'or on the island of Mallorca, it was back to work for three straight gigs , one solo and two with the band, though Jock wasn't with us which gave him chance to settle into his new job at Farm Road Club. Saxophonist Mick Batty spent the same break on the island of Fuerteventura and arrived back a day before me, in time to see the England debacle on TV. What a shit day it was for me on Thursday, flying back from paradise into a cold and rainy Manchester only to be beaten at football by a dodgy Swiss ref . . . . . When we took off from Mallorca England were winning 1-0. When we landed we had lost 5-6 on penalties - what a bummer !
I woke up on Saturday morning full of the joys of spring as Greece had beaten France and that made it all OK again, then on Sunday morning got out of bed and began writing tunes once more, I'll have to take more holidays if this is the effect it has. We have a busy few months ahead until August when Derek and Dave Eyre take their break and then we get stuck in to some serious promotion for a DVD that we're working on . . . . Watch this space !
Dave plus 'Marvin' in action - Derek with newly acquired Jazz bass . . . . The J200 in Dave's den . . .
Meanwhile we begin the mixing down of Brian Locking's first solo album ready for September, as well as work on our latest CD.
Licorice recording at Le Chalet studios
Well we're into 2004 and still haven't started the new CD, but it will get under way pretty soon.
This year our workload is being divided as Jock and myself have other irons in the fire with solo projects, as well as the trio (The Three 'D's ) that Derek, Dave Eyre and myself have formed to accommodate gigs at short notice. You'll find our gig list along side those of Past Masters on the gig page. We only book two months in advance as Past Masters have priority with the date sheet.
I have just completed the recording of the new CD featuring former Shadows bassist Brian 'Licorice' Locking which is being produced by Warren Bennett and there were plans to release this at the 44th Cliff and The Shadows annual meeting at Tilburg in April ,but sadly that won't be happening, as the organizers of this event are planning their own CD with Brian, so we are putting release of our production back to September. Watch this space for details . . . .
The Shadows begin their tour on April 30th at The Futurist Theatre in Scarborough and as there are tickets available for this concert at the time of writing, I reckon that this is THE show to be at. There was a lot of fuss about the last show of the tour being the special one, but more shows have been added since the original gig sheet was publicised and it's my gut feeling that, if the guys enjoy the tour, there will be other concerts after the 'last' one. The Shadows new single is now ready for release , produced by Warren Bennett and engineered by Dick Plant at Honeyhill Studios and it's understood that it will be included on a double CD to coincide with their UK tour beginning in April. It' was written by Jerry Lordan who wrote 'Apache' and 'Wonderful Land' amongst many of their sixties hits and is called 'LIFE STORY' , which would be a fitting end to a remarkable recording career should it be the last one.
NEW PAST MASTERS CD PLANNED
We are currently deciding on material for our next CD and recording is imminent .
Meanwhile, the two existing CD's 'Past Mastering Cliff And The Shadows' and 'Rock And Roll Dance Party' are selling extremely well. Here's a few piccies of our marketing executive Tony Eyre , doing his thing.
It's the interval at a Past Masters gig and Tony goes into action.
At the end of the gig and having bought CD's, the victims are then subjected to Tony's life story.
PAST MASTERS at Bolton 25/10/03
We enjoyed a great night in Bolton Lancs on Saturday 25 October where we made our first appearance at DOBBIES Sports & Social Club. It was a change to play in a new area and to see an audience of new faces who were wondering just what PAST MASTERS were all about. in the audience were our friends from the Manchester area , Dave & Sue Dixon, with Kevin & Brenda Harris for whom we had performed at the Shaddicts events over the last two years.
The audience loved the show and we equally loved being there and will be happy to return in due course. It's a fact that when you work in an area for so long as we have done, seeing many of the same faces on a weekly basis can make the band complacent, but because this was a new area to us, we felt fresh and as a result our performance had an 'edge' that can sometimes be difficult to produce in a run of the mill situation. Below are a few photo's that I took after the show.

AND NOW . . . A day in the life of Past Master's drummer Dave Eyre . . . . .
In case you wondered what these guys do for a proper job, here's some shots of Dave Eyre's daily routine. Dave works for 'HARDCASE', the top UK manufacturer of cases for the transport of musical instruments.
Having made visits to the homes of drummers Roger Odell (Shakatak) and Brian Bennett (The Shadows), a trip to Wembley Drum Centre was his final call. I made the 400 mile plus round trip with him and took some shots inside the impressive Wembley drum centre, as well as a few shots of Hardcase's splendid products.
Dave was quite chuffed to be met by two excellent drummers in the space of a few hours and 'Benbo' made his day by asking him to have a blast on his 'new toy' , the sacred vintage silver Ludwig drum kit that will be used on the 2004 Shadows tour. Brian has had the kit restored for the tour having 'rested' it for nearly forty years !
I couldn't help noticing after Brian's invitation and for the remainder of the trip, that Dave was like a dog with two dicks , as well as grinning like a Cheshire Cat . . . . . . or was it a Monkey !

Shadowmania 2003
Over 1000 Shadows fans made the trip to Camberley in Surrey, more precisely to The Lakeside Complex in Frimley Green where Bruce Welch presented his sixth 'Shadowmania' , featuring former Shadows members Jet Harris, Tony Meehan and Brian 'Licorice' Locking as well as long serving session musicians Alan Jones and Cliff Hall. Also on the bill were fabulous The Rapiers (London) and from Holland The U.B. Hank Band, as well as The Vibratos, with whom Dave Eyre and myself helped out Warren Bennett, Dick Plant and Mark Griffiths , the latter being the chosen bassist for the forthcoming Shadows 2004 tour.
It was a great weekend especially for Dave Eyre who replaced Brian Bennett who did this gig last year, a daunting task to say the least. Dave did a great job as expected, filling Benbo's shoes in admirable fashion, his mini drum solo in 'Cappuccino Kid' commanding rapturous applause.

With the great news that The Shadows are to go on tour in April 2004, it seems that there will be even more interest in sixties music for the foreseeable future , as Paul McCartney's recent tour had rave reviews adding interest all over the world.. The instigator of the coming tour is none other than Brian Bennett, with whom I worked at last years Shadowmania. It seems he enjoyed it so much, as well as the impromptu appearance with Hank Marvin at Nottingham in June 2002, that he suggested a reunion - and it's happening. It's what Shadows fans were praying for and it gives us all another chance to see these guys in action.
In April and May 2003 the two Daves' worked with Warren Bennett, Dick Plant and Mark Griffiths in The Vibratos at the Pipeline convention in London (which is purely an instrumental event) and the French Cliff & The Shadows meeting in Versailles just outside Paris, very enjoyable they were too ! At the French gig, drummer Dave Eyre got himself a fine standing ovation for his excellent interpretation of Brian Bennett's 'Little B'.
The new Past Masters set is taking shape nicely with some great classic hits being introduced, 'Baker Street' , 'Peter Gunn', 'Rip It Up' , a few Drifters' classics and the beautiful 'Constantly' to name but a few. Some Beatles & McCartney numbers including 'Hello Goodbye', after Jock, Dave R and Derek saw the master at work at Sheffield Arena. The whole show is going through a transition and it's getting difficult to decide which stuff to leave out for the new numbers to come in. We're working on some material for our next CD and also the stuff to be included in our 'Party' set for the festive season, though it seems a long way off just now.
Backtracking . . . .

'A Life In The Shadows ' with Brian 'Licorice' Locking
It was a case of 'about turn' as Mark Griffiths found himself being a honorary 'Past Master' in place of Derek Brown who was unable to fulfill this gig. At The Shaddicts bash in November, it was Derek who replaced Mark as he couldn't make it, maybe they will eventually meet. Licorice was delighted to have the opportunity to work with Mark and he wasn't disappointed as 'Griff' is an exceptional all round musician, not only deputising on bass, but playing some great acoustic rhythm along side a very happy Malc Towndrow. The crowd loved it as much as we did and sent us home with thunderous applause ringing in our grateful ears.
I could never in my wildest dreams have imagined as a kid when I picked up my first guitar BECAUSE of The Shadows, that I would be on stage with two of them doing the numbers and the steps and getting paid for it . . . . . . . magic. It seems strange that back in the sixties and seventies I worked with people like David Bowie, The Everley Brothers, Neil Sedaka , Gene Pitney , Herman's Hermits , The Yardbirds , Status Quo, 10cc etc, the list is endless, but they weren't The Shadows so I didn't quite appreciate the scene, as The Shadows seemed to be in a different league and unapproachable to a young professional guitarist like myself. Isn't life full of surprises ? I guess we'll just keep running with it !

We could never have dreamt this as youngsters starting out . . . TWO Shadows on stage !
There will be more photos of this gig in the photo album shortly.

SHADOWMANIA 2002
On Saturday 21 September, it was SHADOWMANIA , the annual event of Shadows music and the like, once again took place at THE LAKESIDE at Frimley Green, Camberley, Surrey, and was organised as always by Bruce Welch, this year featuring Brian Bennett performing with son Warren and studio engineer Dick Plant with their band 'THE VIBRATOS' , who invited me to play rhythm guitar, with Hank's bassist Mark Griffith. Also appearing were Jet Harris, Tony Meehan and Brian 'Licorice' Locking, along with The Rapiers and Scarborough club band 'Legend'.

And Now . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
A NEW BAND . . AND WEBSITE ! WARREN BENNETT . . . THE VIBRATOS
Dick Plant & Warren Bennett Warren & Sir Cliff Hank Marvin & Warren
'The Vibratos'
There's a nice website you can visit belonging to a band called The Vibratos, which features Dick Plant ( who was engineer on lots of Shadows hits & albums ) & Warren Bennett who is a talented chappie from down Watford way who plays keyboards for Hank Marvin, and who's dad Brian plays a mean drum kit .
Their first CD is entitled ' The Ghost Of Old Compton Street' which is also the title of a number written by Warren, played often by Dave in his solo act, which Past Masters are hoping to record in the near future. I have heard this album and as I love instrumental music can highly recommend it to anyone with a taste in guitar music.
The latest CD 'The Cappuccino Kid ' is just as good and original in it's concept.
