Past Masters latest recruit . . . . . . . Alan Jones
Alan with Cliff Richard in the eighties and with Tom Jones in the seventies
I first saw Alan Jones on The Shadows '20 Golden Dates' tour back in 1977, he was to stay as bassist with the band until 1988 when he took the job in the West End musical 'Time' with Cliff Richard.
It was during that time that he was seriously injured in a car crash on the M4 and it was touch and go whether or not he would survive his injuries. At best it was thought that should he survive he would neither walk, drive or play his beloved bass guitar again but Alan amazed everyone and with the support of friends and family and in particular Bruce Welch, who managed to get him back into the music scene again, playing in Bruce's band to this day.
Previous to his time with Cliff & The Shadows, Alan was a sought after session musician and played on many classic hits throughout the '70's, at the same time as securing the job on bass with Tom Jones after the tragic death of John Rostill. It was during this period that he appeared with Elvis Presley in Las Vegas as a result of Tom Jones inviting 'the king' onto the stage at one of the concerts.
Alan moved back to his native South Yorkshire and we are more than fortunate and delighted that he agreed to step into the position as a replacement for Derek, who as I mentioned before is off to pastures new.
And now , Some pictures of Dave Robinson having fun with one or two talented guys !
Warren Bennett , son of Shadows drummer Brian, and Hank Marvin's current keyboardist and arranger, writer of the music for televisions' LONDON'S BURNING and THE KNOCK. Hoss van Hardveld, excellent bass player from Holland who plays in several bands in his home country. On drums is Martin from the band LEGEND, and former Shadow's longest serving bass player Alan Jones who was once offered a job by Elvis Presley . . . . but Tom Jones who he was playing for at the time, refused to let him go ! And pictured bottom right is the guy that took over from Jet Harris in The Shadows, Brian 'LICORICE' Locking, who also plays an awesome harmonica. . . . Don't know the geyser in the glasses though.
